Ah, Holland (accurately the Netherlands)—a country that’s always one leaky dike away from being the world’s most picturesque swimming pool. I mean just look at its geography:
The black region is comparatively higher, but the red- It’s doomed! It’s almost at sea level and only safe (who knows?) because of the dams and dikes, and some new tech!
This constant strife has made “People vs Sea”, the absolute small-talk and long-debate topic of the country’s culture.
The sea is their devil, waves the biggest horror, and dam builders the greatest heroes. Sounds obvious.
Finger in the Hole💀: The Hero of Holland
Once upon a time, in a bumble humble Dutch village, lived a boy whose name had been lost to time. As evening fell, the boy walked home along the great dike that held back the North Sea. A soft, persistent trickle of water caught his attention. Turning, he saw a small leak in the wall—a tiny stream of water seeping through a crack. Though small, he knew the danger: even the smallest breach could bring disaster.
Without hesitation, he pressed his finger into the hole, stopping the water, understanding the weight of his responsibility. He was the only thing standing between his village and the sea.
As night settled, the boy held his position, his courage and resolve keeping the waters at bay. When morning arrived, a villager discovered him, exhausted and shivering. Shocked, he asked, "What are you doing?"
"I'm keeping the water out," the boy replied.
The villagers quickly came to help, patching the dike and reinforcing it. The boy was carried back to the village, celebrated as a hero. His story of bravery, sacrifice, and Dutch resilience was passed down for generations.

So, Let’s get one thing straight: this “little hero” didn’t even come from Dutch folklore. The story was cooked up by an American writer, Mary Mapes Dodge, in 1865, in her book Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates (It’s there on Amazon).
No record of a finger-wielding kid in Dutch history.
